RAJA ZARITH LEADS BY EXAMPLE THROUGH HER INVOLVEMENT IN MRC

HM The Permaisuri of Johor, Raja Zarith Sofiah Binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah has played a leading role in the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) over the past 15 years, although she only became Royal Adviser in 2010.

From her personal experiences and knowledge gleaned over the years, Her Majesty has endeavored to strengthen the MRC’s community services and outreach to deserving and needy people.

A case in point was the 7th Asia Pacific Regional Conference of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies held in Singapore in November 2006.

Soon after, Johor was hit by the worst floods in 50 years in January 2007. She wasted no time to put into practice what she learned from the Disaster Management Workshop at the conference to mobilize one of the biggest flood relief efforts by the MRC.

Donning the MRC vest, she was at the forefront setting up flood relief centres, emergency call hotlines and canvassing for donations in aid of thousands of flood victims in the worst affected districts.

Together with HM The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, Tuanku Permaisuri in her capacity as MRC’s National Community Services Committee Chairman, also braved the rising flood waters to visit affected families in their inundated homes or at flood evacuation centres.

“Visiting people in their homes rather than at a public area gives my family and myself a chance to see for ourselves how they live. We have visited homes with raw-earth as floors and roofs made out of zinc. We know their suffering and pain,” she recounted in her royal keynote address at the recent 28th Tunku Abdul Rahman lecture last week.

Such is the commitment, dedication and sincerity of the Johor Royal Family, which is often the first at the scene to help bring comfort and cheer to those in need during times of natural calamities, tragedy or emergencies.
